The Kurdistan Foundation announced the launch of the first-ever biodiversity project in the nation, "Kurdistan Biodiversity" through its environmental entity Climate.KRD, on July 7، 2026. The announcement was officially made while hosting environmental researchers gathering at Youth Hub Erbil. The initiative marks an important step toward establishing the Kurdistan Region's first verified and centralized biodiversity database dedicated to documenting wildlife and native plant species across Kurdistan.
The initiative aims to create a trusted scientific resource by collecting and compiling verified information on the region's biodiversity facts. Developed in collaboration with researchers, biodiversity specialists, and wildlife photographers, the project supports scientific research, environmental protection, education, and public awareness across the Kurdistan Region.
The event brought together the scientific contributors behind the initiative to recognize their efforts and highlight the progress achieved throughout its development. The event featured an introduction to the biodiversity database, recognition of participating researchers and wildlife photographers, an interactive biodiversity exhibition, and a digital map showcasing ten flagship species across the four governorates of the Kurdistan Region.
A key part of the project is the development of a centralized biodiversity platform that includes species profiles, photographs, scientific classification, habitat information, distribution, and conservation status. The platform is currently in its final stage of development, with verified species information undergoing final review and integration before its public launch.
The project currently documents 309 bird species, 60 mammal species, 80 reptile and amphibian species, and 49 fish species, supported by 215 scientific references, contributions from 14 researchers, 8 wildlife photographers, and information from 19 key biodiversity areas across the Kurdistan Region.
During the event, researchers and contributors emphasized the importance of documenting and protecting the Region's natural heritage through scientific collaboration and reliable biodiversity information.
The initiative reflects the Kurdistan Foundation's continued commitment to supporting scientific research, environmental sustainability, and biodiversity conservation. Through Climate KRD and related initiatives, the Kurdistan Foundation aims to strengthen environmental knowledge, create opportunities for research and collaboration, and contribute to the protection of the Kurdistan Region's natural heritage for future generations.
